For Children
Programming for children from birth to seventeen has been designed to equip children from underserved communities with the physical, mental, and developmental assets that facilitate school and life success. Programming and support for school-aged children, tweens, and teens are also offered at Smart sites.
For Families
Smart addresses the needs of every member of the family. Smart recognizes and builds on caregivers’ strengths. Caregivers have access to crisis intervention and family stabilization services. They are encouraged to set long- and short-term goals to improve their economic status and to overcome social challenges. Opportunities to enroll in adult education and career exploration programming are open to all Smart caregivers.
For Communities
Our community-based work is designed to improve families’ access to, and use of, existing community services, while also ensuring the highest-quality services through close partnerships with other agencies. The Smart model works to engage and enlist the support of both formal and informal stakeholders, business proprietors, and other community-support agencies.

After a year and a half of piloting programs at sites around the city, Smart Atlanta is now fully operational in the city of Atlanta and ready to open our own stand-alone Child & Family Resource Center on the campus of the Tye Partnership for Southern Poverty.
In collaboration with families, local leaders, and stakeholders, we’re expanding our mission to create opportunities, strengthen communities, and close the achievement gap for our youngest learners. This expansion is guided directly by the voices of families. Through listening sessions, surveys, and grassroots engagement, we’ve identified key needs that will shape our work in Atlanta:
- Access to high-quality early childhood education
- Affordable, safe housing
- Job training and employment opportunities
- Mental health and wellness support
- Parenting resources and family support services
- Reliable transportation
- Nutrition and food security
- Community safety and violence prevention
By centering these needs, Smart from the Start is building holistic, community-rooted programs in trusted spaces across the city. Through close partnerships grounded in trust and a shared vision, our SMART program models will soon be implemented at key community sites—bringing critical resources and opportunities directly to where families live and gather.
